Join OSMED’s August Journal Club for a conversation with neuroscientist Dr. Francis McGlone exploring how the human nervous system senses and interprets touch. Dr. McGlone will examine the two touch systems that allow us to detect physical sensations while also experiencing the emotional and pleasurable qualities of touch.

The session will introduce c-tactile afferents, a class of skin nerves that respond to gentle stroking and may influence social development, stress regulation, resilience, and well-being throughout life. Dr. McGlone will also discuss research involving microneurography, psychophysical measurements, functional neuroimaging, behavioral studies, and psychopharmacology that is expanding our understanding of touch, pain, itch, and human connection.

Dr. Francis McGlone is a neuroscientist with a long-standing interest in the nerves that innervate the skin. He is co-director of the International Association for the Study of Affective Touch, a trustee of the Pain Relief Foundation, a member of the Human Space Flight Lab at Johns Hopkins University, and the author of more than 300 scientific papers.
